THE HERTS YOUTH GAMES 2010

Air Ambulance Big Hit at Herts Youth Games!

The 18th Annual Herts Youth Games took place at the stunning facilities of the Hertfordshire Sports Village, University of Hertfordshire on Saturday 26th June with hundreds of young athletes from every corner of Hertfordshire turning out to compete in a variety of different sports including badminton, cricket, athletics and football.

Herts Sport Partnership, who organised the event, chose Herts Air Ambulance as the official charity of the Games for the second year running. The event was a great way for Herts Air Ambulance to raise its profile and give young people an opportunity to learn about its life-saving work. In addition, over £300 was raised for the Charity, helping to keep the County’s Air Ambulance flying. The life-saving aircraft was based at the grounds of the Hertfordshire Sports Village and was operational from the site. All athletes, parents and spectators alike had the unique opportunity of meeting the Air Crew and seeing the helicopter up close, including local dignitaries who were given a tour of the aircraft by Doctor Adam Chesters. Pilot Pete also made a special appearance at the Games and proved to be a hit with the youngsters!

Each District of Hertfordshire was represented by a team of budding young athletes all hoping to win the coveted Victor Ludrum Trophy. Tony Marmo, Senior Competition Manager for the Herts Youth Games said, “This year’s Games featured over 1000 young people, many of whom were previously only partially engaged with sport and physical activity programmes. To represent their district in a competitive environment is something that we hope will inspire them to a lifetime sporting involvement.  As you walked around the site, it was brilliant to see a sea of smiling faces.  This event would not have been possible without a large group of volunteers, the Herts Sports Village, Herts Sports Partnership and Herts Air ambulance for their ongoing and unstinting support."

Nikki Caborn, Herts Air Ambulance Co-ordinator adds, “I would like to thank the Herts Youth Games Association for kindly choosing us as their official Charity for the Games for the second year running and congratulations for putting on such a well organised event. Well done to all those that took part and congratulations to East Herts who were the overall winners of the Games. Having the helicopter and the Air Crew based at the event was a great opportunity to raise awareness of the Charity and educate young people about the work of the Air Ambulance and the Doctor/Paramedic Team as they are our supporters of tomorrow.”
